Stephen Nowakowski was a graduate of Westlake High School in Thornwood, NY and earned an
undergraduate degree in political science at Mercy College in 1983. He was appointed as a correction
officer in 1984 and promoted to C.O. Specialist in 1988 to manage the Tailor Shop at the County
Penitentiary. C.O. Specialist Stephen Nowakowski was a certified firearms instructor and had served
as a dedicated member of the Department’s Training Unit and Ceremonial Honor Guard Unit. He was
a recipient of the Department’s “Exceptional Duty Award” in 2006.
